Character style

The next time we had Tony, we began to learn about character design, and the importance of ‘volume’ when drawing. He got us to all sit and watch an episode of Adventure Time, then told us to try and draw our own character in a similar art style. Whilst we did that, he told us all about the effect of showing volume in your art, and how to make things look three dimensional and give them depth.

On Photoshop we drew a rectangle and coloured it grey in a new layer. After that we turned the layer into a clipping mask and dragged a black and white gradient across it to make it look 3D. We then drew a circle and did the same thing to make it look spherical. This showed us that the placement of light and dark shades makes a dramatic effect on the way something looks.
