Normal, Displacement + Bump maps

Standard

normal mapping

  • Normal mapping – where bumps and dents are overlayed on the surface of a model. It is often used to fake high resolution details on a low resolution model without using more polygons.
  • Displacement mapping – greyscale, changes geometry (silhouette changes too)
  • Bump mapping –  greyscale, older version of normal mapping

In our lesson today, we made our own sci fi crates and then tried to use normal mapping on them. I used the extrude tool to add indented parts and parts that stick out, in the high poly version i used bevel to smooth out the corners.
